Our History

In 1940, a handful of Virginia Public Service Co. employees, who called themselves the Foreman’s Club, were in hot water after playing one too many rounds of poker. They were short on cash when it came time to settle at the end of the night.

Back in those days it was hard to come by a small cash loan easily, so employees looked into creating a credit union. This would allow them to borrow and save with each other and at better rates than elsewhere. Better rates and fewer fees are just some of the ways credit unions differ from other financial institutions. As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, our members own the credit union.

In its early years, Dominion Credit Union was run out of Dominion’s Payroll Department. A single employee, Mary Broaddus, ran the credit union from a box of files she carried on a rolling cart. The only way to access your money was to ask Broaddus for a check.

In the 1980’s the credit union experienced a great deal of growth and it hasn’t stopped since: vehicle loans, checking accounts, membership expansion to include retirees, contract workers, and family members, a member service call center, ATMs and online banking are just a few additions. Through it all, our mission has remained the same: to improve the financial well-being of our members by offering products and services that benefit them.
